What is Ecotourism and some examples of it

Ecotourism is a very important practice that not all of us had implemented in our lives or in our activities when we travel.

In this blog, I will share with you a little bit more of it and why you should visit more places with ecotourism like Rio Lagartos.

What is Ecotourism and why is so important?

Ecotourism has as a main goal, the preservation of nature and culture of destinations that are attractive for humans to explore, but because of its amount of flora, fauna and culture, an irresponsible behavior from us will put them in extreme danger.

This practice will always put the environment first and invites people and touristic industries to treat nature whit kindness and conscience.

Without ecotourism, humans can overexploit the habit of thousands of species of animals and plants, which will eventually cause a bigger trouble for the planet.

What is the difference between ecotourism and tourism?

Even if it was created many years ago under the concept of traveling to areas where men haven’t been and where nature is intact, this without causing any harm to them, nowadays ecotourism is a practice that still is losing against the traditional tourism, which has most of the time, a lot of irresponsibility with the environment.

While traditional tourism is focused on being massive, with a lot of attractions that destroy, most of the times, the beauty of nature with activities out of control with the environment, ecotourism is an alternative of having a good relationship with nature.

According to the International Ecotourism Society, some of the principles of ecotourism that make it different from traditional tourism are:

  1. Build environmental and cultural awareness and respect.

  2. Provide positive experiences for both visitors and hosts.

  3. Provide direct financial benefits for conservation.

  4. Deliver memorable interpretative experiences to visitors that help raise sensitivity to host countries’ political, environmental, and social climates.

  5. Design, construct and operate low-impact facilities.
