Rio Lagartos is a small town in Yucatan, Mexico. It's part of a Biosphere Reserve called Ria Lagartos, which was designated as a Biosphere Reserve by the UNESCO a few years ago because of its big territory full of unique flora and fauna.
It's estimated that in its more than 60,000 hectares of land, exist more than 1,400 species, some of them are even in danger or are exotic.

1. Spider Monkey
The Central American Spider Monkey is an animal that lives in the south of Mexico and most countries of Central America.
Is a rainforest species that needs to live in a big ecosystem to survive and lives about 27 to 30 years. You can identify it by its long body, its black or brown-red skin and especially for it white hair around the eyes and mouth.
The Spider Monkey is very important for its environment because of its role of in the regeneration of vegetation in the ecosystem, sadly, this species is in danger of extinction because of diseases, hunt and deforestation.
2. Flamingo
There's a type of Flamingo, also known as American Flamingo o Caribbean Flamingo. Is a beautiful pink bird that will let you mesmerized by its beauty.
This species can only be found in countries like Colombia, Venezuela, Cuba, some parts of Florida and of course in Mexico, especially in Rio Lagartos, Yucatan.
They live on the coast not so deep into the sea, so when you visit you can identify them easily by their long neck and extraordinary color.
Just as the spider monkey, the Flamingos are considered as a threatened species in Mexico.
3. Crocodiles
Another incredible animal is the Morelet's Crocodile or Mexican Crocodile. Even if they are not the biggest of the species of crocodiles, they are still huge reptiles that can grow about 3 meters!
You can find them just in Guatemala, Belize and Mexico living in isolated lagoons or freshwater lakes and it can be seen more easily after strong rains because of the movement of the water.
Fortunately, this species is cataloged as a Last-concern species, meaning that is not an endangered species.
4. Jaguar
It can be found in part of Central America y South America in tropical regions but also in the desert. Its presence in the ecosystems is very important because helps to maintain a balance with species that can cause overpopulation.
Because of its appearance can be confused with a Leopard, but jaguars tend to be bigger, actually they are at the 3r position in the list of most bigger animals of the Felidae family.
This animal si considered as a endangered species because of human activities like deforestation and hunting.
