3 reasons why you should visit Rio Lagartos in Yucatan



Rio Lagartos is a beautiful natural paradise situated in the Yucatan peninsula which you should definitely visit if you are planning your holiday in Mexico.


Although Rio Lagartos is mainly recognized for being home of gorgeous flamingos and for its pink waters of Las Coloradas, actually, Río Lagartos has an extense variety of amazing places full with nature and culture that sometimes go unnoticed.

1. Río Lagartos is a perfect place for Ecotourism

2. Rio Lagartos is considered a Biosphere Reserve


Because of its over 60,000 hectares of land, which is full of incredible flora and fauna, in 2004 was designated by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve.


This means that it's an area internationally recognized for the importance of its biodiversity, scientific interest, preservation of nature, research purposes, sustainable economy, among others.


It's estimated that exist more than 1,450 species, some of them are endangered animals and others are classified as exotic.


Some of the species that you'll find are flamingos, crocodiles, birds and turtles, such as the hawksbill turtle.



3. You'll get to know more about the Mayan Civilization


In Río Lagartos also you could find the city of Ek Balam that had a big population full with richness and advanced technology for their time.


Unlike any other Mayan architecture in Mexico, Ek Balam has 45 structures of buildings, walls and an acropolis: one of the biggest buildings of the Mayan culture in all Yucatan.
